Threat intelligence is information that focuses on an organization’s security, including threat actors, their motives, capabilities, and targets. Threat intelligence’s principal purpose is to improve an organization’s security, which allows it to identify and prioritize threats, develop and implement mitigation plans, respond to threats, and make more suitable security decisions. Strategic and tactical threat intelligence are the two top types of threat intelligence.

Tactical threat intelligence

This provides detailed data about specific threats, and it helps organizations better understand emerging threats and how to mitigate and respond.

Strategic threat intelligence

This provides a general overview of the threat landscape and helps organizations understand the types of threats they are most likely to face.

Threat intelligence examples include:

  • New information on an up-and-coming phishing scam
  • A list of vulnerabilities that need to be addressed immediately
  • A Report on an unknown hacker group and the tactics they have been using to target a particular industry
