NTLM Definition

NTLM stands for “NT LAN Manager” and is a technology used for authentication and security in computer networks. This digital key allows users to access resources, like files and applications, on a network. It’s a way for your computer to prove its identity to the network, similar to using a password, but without the manual entry.

When an individual wants to access a network resource, their computer will send an NTLM challenge to the server. The server then responds with a challenge that your computer must solve using a special cryptographic puzzle. If your computer solves the puzzle correctly, it’s granted access to the resource.

NTLM is an older technology and has some limitations, namely, not being as secure as more modern authentication methods. That said, many older systems and applications still use NTLM, so it’s important to understand how it works and its potential vulnerabilities to ensure proper security measures are in place.
