In the cybersecurity world, a sandbox refers to the a mechanism for running applications in a limited and confined space. It is often used by developers to test new programs that are still being developed before they are launched online. Sandboxes are also used by IT security professionals to test suspicious files and websites.

In other words, it is an isolated virtual environment that allows you to run uncertified applications, download files and view suspicious websites without exposing the system on which this protection mechanism is running.

Using a sandbox offers an additional layer of protection against cybersecurity threats, thus helping to prevent phishing attacks, malware, and other viruses. A sandbox can protect a company’s critical infrastructure from cyber threats by providing a safe space to test and identify problems before they can affect the actual system.

A sandbox is usually implemented by running software in a restricted area of the operating system. By doing so, it becomes easier to control all of the resources (e.g. file descriptors, memory, file system space, etc.) that a process can use.
