A wireless network is a computer network that communicates wirelessly with other devices, and they are used across homes, businesses, and public places to eliminate the need to use cables to access the internet and share resources.

Examples of Wireless Networks

Wireless networks are strongly associated with wireless internet connectivity, such as Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity). However, wireless networks are also integral to other connected devices that play a critical role in networks and systems. Below are some examples of wireless networks:

  • Bluetooth – This wireless network technology connects devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and headphones, to each other.
  • Cellular – These networks are used by mobile phones to make and receive calls and to connect to the internet.
  • Satellite – These networks connect devices in remote areas where other wireless networks are unavailable.
  • Wi-Fi – This is the most common wireless network that provides wireless access to the internet.

Advantages of Wireless Networks

Wireless networks keep us connected and provide many other advantages that make everyday life easier:

  • Flexible – Wireless networks are more flexible than wired networks, eliminating the need to be tied to a location.
  • Mobility – Wireless networks allow users to move around the network coverage area.
  • Cost – Wireless networks can be more cost-effective than wired networks because they do not require cables, which makes them more accessible.

Disadvantages of Wireless Networks

Although wireless networks play a fundamental role in connecting devices and individuals to the internet and other networks, there exists some disadvantages to wireless networks. Here are some of the disadvantages of wireless networks:

  • Security – Wireless networks are vulnerable to security threats because data is transmitted digitally, whereas, wired networks use cables.
  • Coverage area – Wireless networks offer confined coverage areas that means devices have to be within a certain distance in order to connect to the network.
  • Performance – Distance, interference from other devices, and other conditions are factors that may affect wireless network performance.
